The death is announced from Melbourne of Rear Admiral Frederick Tickell, Director of Naval Reserves in Australia since 1911. He served with the Victorian Naval Contingent in China in 1900-1.

AGGRIEVED STUDENTS.

A number of the students in the

Yei Yang University at Tientsin have been at logger- heads with their Chancellor over the question of changing certain professors. A delegation of eight students is now in the Cap tai to lay their alleged grievences be- fore the Ministry of Education with a demand for the removal of the Chancellor from his post.

Lovisa Cooper, Douglas-road, Surbiton. was ordered by the i Kingston magistrates recently to reduce the number of occupants of her house within 14 days, and was ined £3 3s. fer not complying with a previous order. When an inspector called on July 18 he found that two children in the house had died from influenza or pneumonia. but since ther four more people had gone to live there.

GLASS CASES IN THE THAMES.

A number of cases of window glass were to be seen at low tide recently in the aiud at Black- friars Wharf. During the night the barge Amwell, laden with window glass from Belgium, was heing got into position opposite the premises of Messrs. George Farmiloe and Sons. Blackfriars Wharf, when it listed owing to the swell caused by the passage of tugs. The Amwell toppled over, flinging hundreds of cases of glass into the water. The only man on board at the time escaped without injury.
