PUBLIC SPEAKING,
HOW THE WAR HAS-
IMPROVED- US. .....
Mr. David Hayle, writes to the Daily News --
Agift for public speaking cac- not be described as a characteris- tic of the Englishman, During the war, however, the lecturing which formed part of the duties of large numbers of officers and N.C.Os compelled many a man to overcome a deep-seated aver sion to holding forth before his own. fellow-creatures. As a re sult.. a distinct increase in esse! and assurance is noticeable in (such of our younger men as-are from time to time called up to address a meeting or contribute | an after-dinner speech.
What subaltern will forget that first wet day when the order .came round: "Platoon, com- manders will lecture platoons in their quarters " When he stood up before his men every idea he he had ever had seemed suddenly to have left his head. The know- Redge that his hearers were aware; of his discomfiture and criticising his performance did not exactly improve matters, With each repetition of the ordeal, however, he gained greater self-confidence. Many and valuable were the lessons he learnt in the art of balding attention or regaining it. when it flagged. To get acy good results he had to interest his audience, and the weighter his subject the more effective was a certain raciness of style in rendering it digestible.
The lecturing of the private soldier was indeed a liberal educ- ation in the rudiments of public speaking. Thought he might not, perhaps. give audible expression to his disapproval, he contrived. somehow or another to make it fairly evident when he had had enough. On the other hand, if he was Interested, he would not hesitate to call out "Can't hear, at the back, sir." if the speaker's voice was not sufficiendly distinct. Without such helpful "criticism of his elocution, many a may labouring under the delusion that he was shouting loud enough to wake the dead would have con- tinued in ignorance of the fact that he was inaudible at ten or fifteen yards.
WHITE STAR JUBILEE.
ROMANTIC STORY OF THE WORLD'S BIGGEST SHIPS.
The White Star Line celebrated recently its 20th anniversary. The first of the famous line of big ships to be built was the Oceanic, of 3.707 tons, in 1871. In those dars she created a considerable sensation.
Other vessels followed. and in 1774-1875 two larger ships, the first Britannic and Germanic, were built. The Britannic,
in 1871, crossed from Queenstown to New York in seven days 10 hours 30 min., excelling the previous best Atlantic passage by three hours. In later years came the Teutonic and Majestic, twin-screw steamers cach of 10,- 000 tons. For many years these famous liners were favourites with trans-Atlantic travellers, and the Teutonic did valuable work in the war as an armed cruiser.
The inauguating of a service of twinscrew passinger and cargo steamers between Liverpool, South Africa, and Australia took
1899, place in
when the Medic sailed from the Mersey the sister-ships associated with her being the Afric (lost in the war), Persic, Runic, and Suevic, all of about 12,000 tons.
Steamer after steamer of in- creasing tonnage was quickly added, the Celtic and Cedric each of 21,000 tons. the Baltic, of 24.000 ton, and the Adriatic, 25,000 tons. For many years past | * the White Star Line has produced time after time the largest vessel in existence.
The ambition to construct a
steamer that would eclipse any merchantman afloat was realised in the Olympic. a triplescrew steamer of 46,359 tons. This ship, whose tonnage exceeded almost by 50 per cent, that of her largest predecessor, first sailed from Southampton to New York, on June 14, 1911. The Britanic, as the newest leviathan was named, was unhappily not permitted to justify the hopes of proving a valuable adjunct to the fleet. After maritorious work as a hos- pital ship in the. war she was the sunk by the enemy in Egean in 1916.
