gears. The steam turbine rotates at very high speeds, and when Sir Charles Parson in 1897 first successfully applied it to the pro- pulsion of ships it was directly connected to the propeller shaft. This has proved satisfactory for vessels of about 18 knots speed and upwards. Dr. de Laval, of Stockholm, then
successfulls applied helical gearing to turbines used for land purposes up to 600 brake horse-power. Sir Charles Parsons accordingly began ex- periments in 1901 to test turbines mechanically geared to the screw shaft in a typical cargo vessel of low speed, and showed that this method was suitable. It has now been recognized that increased efficiency can be obtained in fast vessels by the use of reduction

Interesting details illustrating the congestion in our porta were given recently, by Mr. C. E. Turner, partner in a firm of ship- ping and forwarding agents of Liverpool. Mr. Turner was a witness before the Board of Trade Committee that is inquiring, into the Gattie scheme of a central clearing bouse for London traffic.
