SUICIDE IN DESPAIR

Apathetic story lies behind the Gnding of the body of Richard Thomas Cooke (34), late private of the South African Infantry, "in the River Nene, at Peterborough,

When Cooke left the Army be had a good character. and was given a gratuity of £30 10s.. which lasted 17 weeks. He bad then been in work for a week, On August 27 last, being then out. of employment, Cooke left Leeds, where he had been living with a sister, to search for a job.

On August 30, he turned up at Peterborough, where he wen: up to a policeman.

"I'm in a funk, constable," ho said: "I're no home. no bed, no money, and nothing to eat."

Cooke was taken to the police- station" and given a meal. He explained that he had walked from Leeds, and intended to tramp to London to see the authorities about his passage to South Africa, where he had lived for 17 years. He had written, he said, but had got no reply.

After some delay caused by wet weather Cooke started for London, but only got as far as Huntingdon, where, finding him. self penniless, he tramped back to Peterborough. That was week ago, and, on the advice of a friendly constable, he saw the local pensions authorities.

There he seems to have been told that, as he had no pension, they could do nothing for him, but would write to London.

In

Was

the early hours of Wednesday, morning, Cooke found asleep in the recreation grounds, and was again taken to the police station and given food, res: and money.

Thus fortified, the distressed soldier resumed his tramp to London. On Thursday morning his lifeless body was found in the Nene.

The assistant secretary of the Pensions Committee stated at the inquest that hia, unfortunately, If the was not an isolated case. men had pensions and needed temporary help the money could be advanced but if there was no

sion they could not make an adrance. There was an idea with many that the Pensions Com- mittee bad a charitable side, but it was not the case, and there was no fund from which it could be given.

The coroner, in returning a verdict of suicide while of un- sound mind, commended the police for their action, in the case, but it did not seem right in these days for the police to hare to put their hande is their own pockets and help in these cases. It looked that if anybody was responsible, it was the people in London, who had not replied to Cooke's letter, and that pro- bably might have miscarried.

BONES OF ST. GEORGE.

HISTORIC REMAINS GO BEGGING.

It has been suggested in Mel- bourne that the alleged bones of St. George unearthed by Australian engineers beneath the mosaic floor

of a church in Palestine should be sent to London, so that the historic remains of England's patron sain should rest for ever in some cool corner of West- minster Abbey.

Apparently the saint's bones will go abegging. Canon R. H. Charles, of Westminster Abbey, who speaks as a member of the chapter, scorns the pro- posal.

Ido not care tuppence about his bones," he said emphatically to a Daily Express representative. Just-now-I am more concerned with the remains of England, if the labour situation does not alter, than the remains of any saints. Besides, there is only room for) the remains of six more famous people in the Abbey, and even then they must be cremated be- fore they are interred. So what is the good of bringing his bones. here to be burnt in some crematorium?

"You see those old houses behind that Norman wäll there?" he asked, walking into his garden bohind his house in the Little Cloisters. Well, they will have to come down some day, and I want that space reserved for the interment of the remains of the famous living and the great men of the future. There are so many great men nowadays, and there will be so many in the years to " come, that space for six seams. inadequate.

"When we get this space we may have room for the burnt bones of St, George."
