A SIGN OF THE TIMES. Very considerable interest is being aroused among the British shipping community on the Tyne, and especially among officers. owing to the new departure of Japanese shipowners, who are in Telephone No. 36. a large number of cases dispens- ing with European officers. The Japanese steamer Kaikyu Maru. carrying 4 стен of 80, has arrived from Manchuria. She is quite a new vessel built in Japan, and has come here to load coal. She is manned entire- by Japanese, and is one of the first arrivals in the river manned solely by Japs, and carries no European officers. The Tayio Tai Yaru has brought copper from Batavia, having called at Hamburg on her passage. She carries a crew of 49, all of whom are Japanese. Until recently all these ships carried European officers.
ENGINEERING WONDERS. Sir Charles Parsons, in his Presidential address before the British Association pointed out that among the minor improve- ments which in recent years have contributed to a higher efficiency in turbines are the more accurate curvature of the blades to avoid any losses in the steam. the raising of the peripheral velocities of the blades to nearly the velocity of the steam impining upon them, and details of construction
to reduce leakages to a minimum.
