JAPANESE SHIPPING RETURNS. According to the investigation of the Communications Depart ment. the Japanese shipping returns, as they stood on July last, were 2,803 vessels registered in Japan proper having in aggre- zate cross tonnage of 3,621,833. The returns for Japan's colonies comprise 87 vessels of 37,700 tons registered in Chosen, 26 vessels of 7.658 tons registered in For- mosa., and 70 vessels of 136,130 tons in the Kwantung "Leased Territory, the aggregate being 2.956 vessels of 2,793,099 tons.

3. Y. K'S PLAN WITH 20 NEW BOATS. The N. Y. K., which has already ordered 10 superior cargo boats, will have them completed about next May, and they will be used to fill up the gaps made by the loss of the Yasaka, the Miyazaki, Ron the Hitachi, the Hirano, the Tokuyama, and the Takata, etc. The company is reported to build 10 more superior passeneger boats for developing its sundry services. distributing steamers of 5000- 6000 ton class to the Shanghai line: 2 more vessels of 20,000 ton class to the N. American service; and the other 6 boats of 12.000 ton class to the European run.,, all totalling about 120.000-130,000 tons gross.
