For the first time 1914 the births in Paris for the week ending) August 9 exceed the deaths. There were 658 ehildren born alive (32 boys and 337 girls), of whom 423 were legitimate and 235 illegitimate. This is equivalent to an annual birth-rate of 11.84 par 1.000 on the Parisian popula- tion at the last census (1911), which is now increased in spite of the large excess of deaths over
