The steamers of less than 1.000 tons gross amount to 12,521, i.e.. over 50 per cent. of the total number of steamers of 100 tons and up- wards recorded in Lloyd's Register Book. It is also interesting to note that nearly 22,000,000 tons of shipping is now actually classed by the Society, and the existing vessels wtich were formally classed total over 5,600,000 tons. Of the total tonnage classed, over 10 per cent. is composed of steel steamers classed 100 A1.
