MODERN YOUNG MEN AND THE FLAPPER.

BLUSHING BRIDES OF FORTY-FIVE IN FAVOUR.

Is difference in age à bar to the happiness of husband and wife?

The question is suggested by several recent marriages in which the bride has been considerably older than her husband. A few years ago failure was invariably predicted for a marriage in which the husband was the younger; to-day a woman of 45 marries a man of 35 with the sincere and hopeful good wishes of all her | friends.

"Difference in age doesn't matter a scrap to-day," the or- ganiser of a woman's war work society insisted, in discussing the subject with a Daily Chronicle representativa. "Very many wo men over 40 came to me in the early days of the war and asked for work. I was a little doubtful of their capacity, because they looked so tired, so old. But I ac- cepted them, and within six mon- ths they were different women. Before the war you would have described them all as 'old maids'; to-day they are young women, some of them happily married.

HARD WORK THE BEAUTIFIER.

"Hard work, a keen interest in things outside their little homes, and the mixing with other women of different temperament and calling broadened these 'old maids' amazingly; they felt they were wanted in the world. Thare was useful work for them to do; they put away their trivialities, forgot to think about their health. and in real hard work they found their youth and their charm: return."

The secretary of a tennis club said that many members were women who must be well over 10.

"I don't like to prophesy marriage for all of them," she said, "but they are vastly different! from the conventional woman of 45 whom we knew five years ago. These women play a hard set of tennis, and are better for it; there is no doubt-that hard physical war work gave them tone and en- durance, and tempted them to take up games which before the war they would not have dared to play

man in the middle thirties might prefer a wife some years older if she were of this type; she would make less demands than a pretty flapper with expensive tastes, she would be a better pal, and there would be more chance of solid happiness in such a marriage than in many unions where the wife is very much the younger."

The curate of a suburban church reported that very many marriages which he solemnised were between men and women of widely differing ages. PREFERENCE FOR THE MATURE.

"I think men are beginning to: get a little afraid of the young woman of to-day, attractive as she undoubtedly is," he said. "A woman who was seen something of life and has yet kept her charm and her vitality has in a sense proved herself: she is not an un- known quantity. She has less ambitious ideas than a bride of 20, who wants to begin married life with a smart villa and two maids. She is likely to be a better home-maker; the war has made women seem so much younger that I do not think the difference in years is likely to be remember. ed even if the woman is ten years older...

"I do not suggest, of course, that a woman of 50 should marry a boy of 20, but where the man is) over 30 and the woman is five or ten years older I see no reason to to suppose that the marriage will be anything but happy. In my own experience as a.clergyman

I have seen such marriages turn out very successfully."
