THE LUXURY MACHINE

Just as there are two broad principles which govern the design of a motor-car, either to aim at excellence irrespective of cost or to simm at a low price with less regard to finish, so there are two similar policies in con- nection with motor-cycle pro- duction. Needless to say, finish per se and low price per se form the extremes of a scale some- where along which each manu- facturer will select a position which, to his idea, represents the best compromise; and it is, per- "hape, only natural that the great majority of makers tend rather to cluster around the mid-point of the scale, so that their products differ greatly neither in finish nor in value for money. In the car market there is an almost in- numerable variety of vehicles. have the designers of which. sought to unite in them some- thing of Rolls-Royce elegance and something of sterner economy.

But what of the Rolls-Royce of motor cycles? Can anything be done at this end of the scales? Singularly enough the only set-

This is a manifest reversal of the usual order of things, but the ease of this particular make is by no means exceptional, for it may be said without exaggera- tion that most of the American motor-cycle firms, or at all events those which are sufficiently big to be represented in this country. aim at luxury regardless of price to a far greater extent than does the British manufacturer. The latter, it almost seems, has in- sufficient confidence in the future of the motor-cycle to embark upon the Rolls-Royce policy. al- though he is actually better equipped for carrying it out than his transatlantic competitor.
