GENERAL PERSHING HONOURED.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, -1919.

Paris, August 31.

General Pershing has made the following statement to French newspaper correspondents: We feel that we carry back with us an intimate knowledge and appreciation of France and its people, its art and its culture. We shall regard these days of comradeship in strife and struggle as an everlasting bond between our peoples. The occasion was the departure of the General Pershing when the American Ambassador in Paris gave a dinner in booour of President Poincare. Among the guests were the highest officials of the French Government. French papers specially honour General Pershing, stating that he carries away a memory that will never be effaced of affection, gratitude and admiration for the whole French nation.

ኔነ

Paris, August 30.

General Pershing was received by President Poincare at, Elysee. On behalf of the French Academy an address" was sent to General Pershing greeting in his person the American armies landing in France with an expression of affectionate gratitude after accomplishing their noble.task.

FRANCE AND AMERICA

Paris, August 30.

The sale of surplus supplies of the American Expedition- ary Force to the French Government is an excellent bar- gain for France. There is the strongest evidence that the French and American Governments are prepared whole- heartedly to co-operate to mutual advantage in working out the problems of peace. French papers are full of praise

at the American Government donating to the French Gar- ernment the docks, waterways, barracks and power plant valued at 13 million fränes.

GERMAN RAILROAD STOCK.

Paris, August 30.

The Japanese Delegation in Paris denies the purchase of German railroad stocks which was alluded to by the American Parsian paper. The Japanese state that the news is so ridiculous that no sensible person could give it the slightest credence. Such unfounded rameurs have only the effect of breeding mistrust between the Allied and Associated Powers.

The Japanese iron market is coming firmer in view of 8 hardening of the Eng- lish and American markets. Itt is believed in Japan that the im- port of iron from England will be much handicapped for some time. to come, considering the possibil- ity of prices being raised owing to a large increase in freights, and to the growing demand for iron in England itself.
