FRENCH GIRL'S LAWN TENNIS TRIUMPH

MRS LAMBERT CHAMBERS

GLOBES HER TITLE-

Herbert L. Bourk writes in the Daslys Chronicle of July Tas follow

Mix Lambert Chambersshould. be a proud woman to-day Ehe lost her championship at Wim-

blédbe by blade of grass, as it The

were stid endured for three trying sets in a manner most amazing.

It was match sa dramatic in ita fluctuations that only those who were there will ever realise how it cast a spell over the spectators; and it was such an exhausting duel that few mon conld have stood the strain- nervous or physical.

To have lived to fight such a fight, and to lose so full of honoura --flying the flag of her country to the last was a great achieve- ment.

We felt that Mrs. Chambers was fighting for us; not for herself. Our King and Queen, seated in the Committee Box,, had thairi attentions. riveted on the enthral- ling play; and men who had seen all the best lawn tennis for a quarter of century, confessed that! the dramatic exchanges left them Jimp

As I saw Mrs. Lambert Cham-

·borg "wound up to a supreme effort against this wonderful little French player, 30 many years her junior calling upon her physical energies to the "utmost: straining her nerves almost to breaking point, and exercising that wonderful brain of here in a great tactical battle, I was lost in admiration, and I wondered why she set herself such a task. THE REAL SPORTSWOMAN, Mrs. Chambers, seven times the winner,, might have retired this year with her honours in- have taet, and nobody could

complailed, but, in the national intereste, she preferred to fight again. It was sports manlike to the highest degree.

Much of what Mrs. Chambers did we expected because of her ripe experience, allied to her re putation as a remarkable player.

As for Mile. Lenglen, whilst most of us thought she migh+ just win because of her blessed gift of "genius, we were not prepared to see anything beat such a game as Mrs. Lambert Chambers play- ed on Saturday.

The result-10-8. 4-6, 9-7 in Mlle. Lenglen's favour-when it is considered that the French girl pulled up from arrears in both the sets she won, after Mrs. Chambers, had brought her down from a 4-1 lead in each instance, revealed a temperament for -critical situations that was mar- vellous in one so young.

There were times, however, when the "oċession" appeared likely to beat the little wonder.

She made more mistakes than. usual; but that was partly due to the fine game she was up against, and the difficulty in getting through her opponent's great defence.

A SENSATIONAL RECOVERY. - The French player's recovery ia the third set, when Mrs, Cham- bers was at 6-5 and 40-15, re- quiring only one stroke for the in tch, was sensational.

Mrs: Chambers was serving, and apparently steadying herself

to make sure."

With Mlle. Lenglen it was all out or nothing, and with ex- traordinary courage she bought off two winners-fire attacking shots which had the English champion out of position....

Thereby Mile. Lenglen won the championship. It was still touch- and-go; but, bringing all those things of she had previously missed by inches, and scoring with that fine over-head "curl" stroke on the back-hand, by which sha repeatedly crossed her opponent, the remarkable little player showed her best form of the meeting in the last four games. There were times when Mllə. Lenglen appeared to have exhausted her physical energies in the greatest ladies' match on record. She drooped and revived: she had her friends on tenter- books, and left them Over- whelmed with ecstatic joy.

A SECOND SENSATION. From 8.30 in the morning the people waited to see the match, and thousands" went down, to Wimbledon later in the day up- able to get near the play..

It was all the sensation we needed for one day, but there was more to follow in the defeat of Norman Brookes and G. L. Pat terson in the doubles semi-final by RV. Thomas and P. O'Hara Wood

Here we had two great indivi- dualists unable to get together against the wholehearted attack the only way) of two men of scintillating brilli

in combined well and anded for their audacious. Rooing things comé of
