FAMOUS, PAINTER'S CITIZENSHIP.

EVIDENCE BY MR OBAMBERLAIN.......

Deep interest was taken in the tribunal proceedings în the Eaw Courts recently of the appeal of Mr. Philip de Laszlo, the famous society portrait painter, against revocation of his naturalisation papers.

The Chancellor of the Exche- quer, Mr-Austen Chamberlain, was a witness, and bore personal testimony on behalf of de Laszlo's character and intentions.

Mr. Justice Salter presided and Viscount Hambleden and Judge Ratcliffe completed the tribanalany tirled persons, military officers, clergymen," and people well known in the art world were present in court.

Mr. Laszlo himself, with his wife sat in the front row.im- mediately below the tribunal, He followed closely the state- ments of witness and contending counsel he was represented by Sir John Simon. K.C and Mr. Harold Murphy, and the Crown by Sir Gordon Hewart, K.C. M.P. (Attorney-General). Sir Archibald Bodkin, and Mr. G.H. Branson,

Besides the well-known artists in court were Lady Haig, Lord. Weardale. and Lord Sheffield. Next to the last-named sat Mr. Austen Chamberlain, and close by Sir Basil Thompson, of Scot- Find Yard, kept a watching brief for the special services.

When the Court adjourned a number of well-known society women waited in a group at the door and shook de Laszlo warmly

by the hand before he walked away from the mildings with his wife.

Naturalised on August 29. 1914, the artist

The nucleus of the scattered material ranging over the whole war period which the Attorney- General had to present was mainly a voluminous correspond- ence from de Laszlo to friends and relatives in enemy countries. The sources of these numerous letters were the home of Mr.
