NELSON'S LOG BOOK,
:▪་་་
THE POST RECALLED.
Chi November 6, 1911, the Daily Telegraph announced that "the ""sailing-master's rough log book of Nelson's Victory, covering “Trafalgar and the Isat séa journey home of the dead hero, was to be sold by public auction. This paper than published a facsimile offts saa stained page, recording! in sailor-like and succinct style the doings on that great day, Octobes 21, 1805, and the public was mightily stirred. In a few hours the cables from America этого at work. and coute qu'il coule prices were flashed across. But that English collector of Nelson relics-the late Mr. Thomas J. Barratt, of Bell Moor, Hampstead-was quickly up and` doing. Did he not already possess the original Prize List" of the Victory? He owned, too, the Lloyd's presentation silver service to Nelson efter Copenhagen. The woodwork in his santrion at Bell Moor was entirely made up from pieces taken from Nelson's old battleships, and often had he striven to tempt an opulent wine merchant at Lisbon to release the old Victory's cabin table and side- board which stood in a dining- room facing the Atlantic. Within forty-eight hours Mr. Barratt said to us, "I've got the log." But on June 30 this rear at Sotheby's this national relic was again in the market.
As stated at the time, this rough log-book, in the hand of Thomas Atkinson. Nelson's staunch navigating lieutenant. and Man Friday (he it was who supported Nelson when his right arm was amputated at Ten ariffe) was the faithful chronicler of the original log from which he made his fair copy for despatch to the Admiralty - in order to comply with the service rule. No log. "no pay." This "fair copy now reposes at the Public Record Office, yet it is a remarkable fact that only in the original rough deck-log, just re-offered, iş the record of the signals which passed between the Victory and the Fleet on the morning of Trafalgar, before 915 a.m. The reconstruct- ion of the battle signals, asmaval historians know, was rendered possible by the preservation of the logs of the Belleisle, Mars, Ajax, Orion, Defiance, Conqueror, Bellerophon, Naiad, Neptune, Euryalus, Achille, Temeraire,

But this old book, in its cover of rade sail-cloth, should become a national heirloom. Before it was ransomed by Mr. Barrett it bad been faithfully handed down and preserved by Atkinson's descend- ants.
