CONCERTED ACTION BY THREE COMPANIES.

A telegram from our Shanghai correspondent to-day states that' the steamship companies have decided to raise the passenger rates between Hongkong, Shang- hai, Japan and Manila. It is not

of, the Pacific Mill Steamship Company's agents from various parts of Japan, China, the Philip- pines and the Straits Settlements was held at Shanghai recently.

The Canadian Pacific Mail Company, the Tokyo Kisen Kai- sha and the Pacific Mail Steamship Companies practically work together. There are inter- changeable tickets and one ticket on one line is good for the other, Therefore it is essential that the passenger rates be the same.

A year ago the question came up whether the fares, instead of- being quoted as at present in gold dollars, should be quoted in local currancy. The matter was dis- cussed at a meeting and it was turned down “cold.” There is lack of consistency in the pre- sent tariff of passenger fares. For

Silk & Cotton instance, the first class fare

to Shanghai is quoted in gold dollars, namely, $33, while second-class

passengers 2.59 charged Mexican 827.15. It is certainly a better plan to quote fares in the local currency than in the currency of a distant land. The arrangement probably arrived at by the Conference, is to

all quote

fares to Shanghai, Manila and Japan in local currency, as it has been until 1913, instead of in Americangold dollars. The three steamship companies that we have referred to as working with the Conference receive all their instructions from Yokohama, and " 80 far nothing is known locally

to the line of action these companies will adopt. Instead of taking gold dollars, which works out at practically Mex. $1,20 at the present exchange, the three companies will probably quote in a fixed local rate.

as

The Manager of one of the three shipping companies referred to, said the statement that came from Shanghai was premature inasmuch as the lines had not agreed to any rates. He did not think that the rates would be increased. His Company wanted tarifs to be on a uniform basis instead of being in different currencies. The present system of collecting fares to Manila, Shanghai and Japan in gold dollars had been in operation since 1914, and had entailed unnecessary work on the staff. For очет

year some of the local companies have been charging steerage pas- sengers Mexican dollars. Some companies carried steerage pas- sengers for through ports. The exchange rate fluctuated so much that it was commonly believed that the system of collecting in American gold was unsuited to local conditions. So far no de- finite arrangements had been reached. At any rate, he did not think the new Mexican dollar rates, if they come into force, would work out higher than the gold tariffs.

a

If may be mentioned that a number of companies plying vessels to Japan, Shanghai and Manila have so far not been approached to adopt the new system"

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN

AGAINST SUMMER ILLS.

Every mother knows how fatal the hot summer months are to small children. Cholers infantum, diarrhoea, dysentery and stomach troubles are rife at this time, and often a precious little life is lost after.only a few hours illness.,

The mother, who keeps Baby's Own Tablets, the Canadian children's remedy, in the house feels safe. The occasional use of These Tablets prevents stomach and bowel troubles," and when sickness comes suddenly they help bring the little one through.
