WIRELESS FOR SHIPS.
A Government bill introduced in the House of Lords by Lord Somerleyton provides that every British passenger steamer and every ship of 1.600 tons gross or upwarda must be equipped with а wireless installation, and maintain a wireless service suf- ficient to comply with rules to be. made by the Board of Trade, and must carry one or more certified operators and watches. Failure to make such provision will ren- der the master or owner able to a fine of £500 or £100 if the offence is prosecuted summarily. in Council, these requirements From a date to be fixed by Order will apply to foreign ships using British ports. Power is given to the Board of Trade to exempt from the obligations imposed by the bill any ships or class of ships if they are of opinion that, having regard to the nature of the voyages, or other circum- stances of the case, the provision of a wireless apparatus is un- necessary unreasonable.

AUSTRALIAN FREIGHT WAR. Mention has already been made of the increasing tension in the Australian freight war between conference steamship companies and the Taiyo Kaiun. In this connection, the Osaka Asahi notes the war will reach its climar in July. Besides the Taiyo Kaiun, the Masudaya, the Suzuki, and the Mitsui Bussan each with chartered steamers, have broken into the Australian line for cargoes on return voy- ages. Regarding outward voyages, however. these

The competition in the outward sailings lies between the N. Y. K., etc., and the Taiyo Kaiun. Fortunately, or unfortunately, there are not, it is said. many consignments on outward trips to compete for. The N. Y. K. has not yet decided what extra steamers to dispatch for July, but it will have to decide soon
as the the Taiyo Kaiun is prepared to continue the war in view of large cargoes on return voyages.
