Berne, June 19,

It is announced that in view of the possibility of disturbances in Germany during the period wherein Germany must accept or refuse the pesce terms, and in order to obviate the danger of great masses of people flocking from Germany into Switzerland, the Federal Council has placed a large force of troops as a war footing to guard the northern frontier.

Router learns that the Volunteer Army's offensive in Southgame of football Russia is continuing very successfully. They have captured Ber- dianak, west of Mariupol, and recaptured Luganak, in the Donetz sector. Farther East, the Don Cossacks have crossed the Don on a 60-mile front south-east of Gogutchar and advanced 40 or 50 miles beyond. The Bolshevists' position in Astrakhan is difficult, as their communications are, threatened. The Bolshevist advance, on the Eastern Front has slowed down. It is hoped that General Denikin's advance will necessitate the withdrawal of Bolshevist troops on this front, enabling Admiral Koltchak's Army to recover and reorganise.

MONASTERY TAKEN FROM BOLSHEVIKS.

London. June 21

General Ironside telegraphs that the Russian National Army captured Kojazerski Monastery on the 17th. The only approach to the Monastery, which is situated on an island in Lake Kojazero, in the neighbourhood of Onega, is a narrow causeway 800 yards long. The Bolsheviks had held the Monastery since last September, when they murdered the Abbot and evicted the monks.

THE SINKING OF THE GERMAN FLEET.

London, June 21

It is reported from Edinburgh that arrangements had been made to board the German Fleet on Monday should peace be signed, as the ships would then automatically pass to the Allies, but the German crews anticipated matters by sinking them.

DEFENCE OF THE EMPIRE.

STRONG NAVY OR LEAGUE OF NATIONS?

London, June 20. Speaking at a farewell luncheon of the British Empire League in London, Mr. Hughes emphasised the necessity of depending on the British Navy for the defence of the Empire rather than on the League of Nations. He declared that the material ties of the Empire ware trade and defence, and unless there was an Imperial system of defence, the Empire was but the fabric of a dream. He welcomed the League of Nations, but if the Empire were suddenly and unexpectedly attacked, the League could only put its machinery into motion while; where would we be? He enjoined the people not to abandon after a prolonged discussion on the merits of the differences. Mean the substance for the shadow. The people who talked most about disputes was with the sword. If the League of Nations meant the power of the League to control the movements of the British Navy when the Empire required aid, than that was the beginning of the end of the Empire.
