FASHIONS AND TEMPER.

Dr. Leonard Williams, lectur- ing recently at the Nursing and Midwifery Conference at Morti-i mer Hall, W advocated the use of well-fitting corsets. He believe that aboriginal man was a four-footed animal. The ab- doarinal construction was intend- ed for that posture. Since human beings had taken to walking on their hind legs the position of the abdominal organe had been thrown out of gear Healthy. I outdoor-living athletes might get on very well, but people who lived a sedentary life required some kind of support, such as was given by corsets. This was essential to people who. like "nurses, had to be on their feet all day. Dr. Williams said that people with tight collars did not drain their brains properly, and often suffered from bad tempers. He had noticed that since women! had given up high collars. and were wearing garments which

ave complete freedom to the neck. they had become sweeter tempered.

LAWN TENNIS CHAMPION. A Melbourne message makes he definite announcement that Norman Brookes will defend the world's singles lawn tennis cham- pionship at Wimbledon. in June. Indeed, he announced his intent- ion of sailing for England for this special purpose. It was in 1905 that Brookes made his first appearance in England, and he was then beaten in the challenge round, by H. L. Doherty. "He won the championship two years Inter, and again in 1914, when he deprived the late Capt. A: F. Wilding of the title. Although hes now in his 42nd year, Brookes should have a good chance of retaining his title. No home players appear to possess sufficient ability to beat him; but the great possibilities of A. H. Gobert, of France, should not be overlooked, whilst it remains to be seen whether any of the Americans, with their "whirl- ind " methods, will decide to compete. The presence of Brookes will render this a big Australian tennis year. Already several heir international players are Englatid, and they will figure the covered courts champion- at Queen's Club, next week. of the most attra
