The words "where He had been brought up" cast some little light upon that early life, of Lord Jesus, 80 little detailed it the gospel narratives. Biographers to-day record all they can about the early form- ative period in the lives of great men, and it is always interesting to study the influences which bore upon the character, in its plastic period. We are peculiarly grateful for the few references in the gospels to our Saviour's early years, brief, but all of them signi- fcant. This one in our text is apt to be overlooked, attention being naturally concentrated upon the scene which follows, when Jesus in His native town began publicly to proclaim His mission. But we are informed here, in- cidentally, of a habit "of His formed, like so many habits, in early years.

It was His custom to join regularly in the worship of the synagogue, and He had acquired the habit in "Nazareth, the place where he had been brought up." Taking the text along with what we know of the training of Jewish

Even in unpromising surround- ings the training of the good home will have its effect. Nazareth was on ill-reputed place, yet out of it came this best of men; and in it He grew in grace. Must we not believe that the training which accompanied His growth in grace is a training to be imitated ?

There may be much against your children in the surroundings of their lives. Here in the East these are not in many respects such as your would choose for their plastic years. But your home matters far more than your city. Even in Nazareth there were consecrated homes and their consecration was renewed and their piety fortified every time the members, as their custom was, went up to the synagogue for prayer.

Taking a further step we gather from the text that in the case of days, on which, as child and our Lord the trained habit of His youth, the son of Mary and Joseph youth became the deliberate went to the house of God in com-

NO TIME FOR BLUFF.

Paris, May 30

The whole tone of the German proposals is such that the Berlin Government, can hardly believe they will be taken seriously. The German Government will be well advised to remember that the hour is approaching when no bluff will avail the Allies being united. When Germany refuses to sign the Treacy was will be renewed in the sharpest form. All Berlin is occupied in reading the complete text of the German counter-proposals. The liberal press declare that it bas no expectation that the Entente will practically recognize Germany as being a new democracy having abandoned all idea of militarism. The imperialist and conservative press is hitter against the document: summing up "The Allies ask us to submit to murder; we ask ourselves to commit suicide." --Ilavas.

It is instructive also that whilst in the Christian 'dispensation the great body of Jewish ordinances and sacrificies was set aside, the ordinance of weekly worship was carried on. That, together with the passover remembrance trans- formed to the Christian Eucharist is all which has been handed on from Jewish to Christian obser- ance. These two are fit survivals

if one may use the term, which have a permanent place because they are of lasting value.
