In writing on labour conditions in British Malaya, United States Consul General, Mr. Edwin N. Gunsaulus, Singapore, notes that, apart from special war reasons. there has been a generalaendency. for wages in every branch of labour gradually to rise. This increase, he thinks, may be' regarded as the natural concom- itant of the country's develop- ment and prosperity. Incidentaly, he notes a prevailing tendency for Chinese labour to drift into the merchant classes when circumst- ances permit. It is well known that many flourishing Chinese trading and merchant firms in the Straits Settlements and the Federated Malay States owe their existence to men of the coolie class, and ir may be said to be typical of the Chinese labourer to set up in trade or business as soon as he has amassed sufficient capital to do so. This is one of the reasons that the Chinese make such excellent immigrants. One and all strive to get on and it is astonishing how well they succeed.

Describing his flight with General Weir from Farnborough to Mudros, in Greece, the Master of "Semphill told the Junior Institution of Engineers that they covered 2,100 miles, at an average speed of 1334 miles an hour. They could not continué the journey to Egypt owing to the lack of means for making rapairs. Their experience showed that three things were essential for successful long distance flights. A most careful consideration of the parts of the machine, good weather-reports at all aero- dromes quicker arrangements for taking in petrol."
