EARLIER TELEGRAMS.

GERMAN OBJECTIONS TO PEACE TREATY.

Copenhagen, May 15....... "A message from Berlin says Count Brockdorff Bantzan has informed the German delegates that the Fersailles Pesce Treaty in its present is form not acceptable and could not be signed because it was impossible to fulfil the termS and because the German delegation would sign nothing which it did not intend to full. The delegation would endeavour so to improve the treaty as to make signature possible. He reckoned on the full co-operation of all mem- bers of the delegation thereanent. The speech was received --with- general applause.

the delegation admits that self-determination can be asserted as regards a number of the proposed territorial" changes but protests against the temporary handing over of the Bar Basin because it is inhabited by a purely German population. It is resolutely opposed to severance from Germany and protests against the ultimate reversion of this region being dependent on Germany's shility pay in gold. as fifteen years hence it will be impossible for Germany to have the necessary gold at its disposal. Moreover it pre- sumes that the Indemnification Commission if Germany possessed the necessary gold would not permit its use there for. The delegation recognises that France must be com pensated for the destruction of its mines and suggests alternatively the readiness to negotiate on a basis of supply-. ing German coal from the Saar and Rahr regions until the devasted mines are restored. As regards the cantons to be given to Belgium it declares that no proof can be adduced that the districts are inhabited by a non German population and says the proposed plebiscite has no justification.,,

TRIBUTE TO NURSE CAVELL,

London, May 13.

Great crowds turned out on this typically fine English summer day to pay a last tribute of respect to Nurse Cavall. The coffin reached Victoria from Dover and was received by the Coldstream Guards. A procession was

formed by the Coldstream Guards and bands of the Scots and Welsh Guards playing the Dead March. Then the bier was mounted on a gun-carriage and the cortege pro- ceeded along the route lined with thousands of soldiers who saluted as the coffin passed On reaching Westminster

Abbey, where a great and distinguished congregation was assembled, including Queen Alexandra, and the Earl of Athlone, representing the King, a moying service was held it being concluded by rolling drums of growing intensity, followed by the Last Post. The cortege reformed and passed amid "manifestations of public sorrow along the embank- meat to Liverpool Street Station en route for Norwich where the remains were finally interred..

THE EGYPTIAN SITUATION,

London, May 3.

Lord Curzon in the House of Lords replying to Lord Crewe said the situation in Egypt bad certainly, improved although it was not yet describable as satisfactory. Order <had been generally restored in the provinces but sporadic disturbances had to be forcibly quelled in soine towns, especially Cairo. Egyptian affairs had been conducted without native Ministers since the resignation of the Ministry on April 22. The British Government emphatically declared that it did not intend to abandon the respon- sibilities which it incurred when the task of governing Egypt was placed on its shoulders.

The Government believed that the Egyptians should be given an ever increasing share in the Government and it was their desire to see Egypt under British guidance advance in prosperity and enlightenment to take its place as a leading Islamic power.

The Council of Four to-day consulted the Military conditions of which are similar to those of Germany, advisers regarding the Austrian peace térms. the military providing for the dismantling of all unnecessary arsebals," including Skoda, the abolition of conscription and the limitation of the Austrian army. The terms are expected to be banded to the Austrians on May St.
