A native of Belfast, he entered the service of the Admiralty at Chatham 18 8 shipwright- apprentice, and gained rapid promotion. He was selected by Sir John Fisher to baild, the battleship Dreadnought, and was appointed Chief Constructor at Portsmouth. Sixteen months was the time allotted to build the ship, but Sir Thomas, to the general surprise, had it finished in twelve.
