BRITAIN'S INFLUENCE ON PEACE TERMS.
Paris, April 30.
A prominent authority has mentioned the fact that although it is not generally realised Britain's part in the work of the Peace Conference has been almost pre- "ponderating. He instances the League of Nations and the Labour Convention, pointing out that the latter was penetically wholly a British achievement, whereas Britain dañas at least equal shares with President Wilson in the preparation of the league, as the discussions of the League of Nations Commission were based on General Smuts's -draft, and it was doubtless a recognition of Britain's part thas a British official was appointed-first Secretary of the League. The naval terms and air clauses of the Peace Treaty are substantially as drafted by British authorities. Moreover the proposal to abolish German conscription," one of the most important clauses, emanated from Britain, while the British view that the ex-Kaiser be tried and the atrocitiam punished ultimately prevailed. The authority added that Britain in other"matters like compensation for mahmarmisin had more than pulled her weight. As regards what Germany loses by the was spart from human life, the following is noteworthy German loses seventy per cent, of her iron ore, one third of her coal, twenty per cent. of her potash, between seven and eight millions of her former inhabitants, of whom a large proportion are non- German, also colonies and ships.
REVOLT AGAINST BOLSHEVISTS.
London, April 30. Reuter learns authoritatively that the Russian peasants are increasingly revolting against the Bolshevist Govern- ment, especially in districts Rear the Volga and Central Russia In the Saratoff Government martial law was proclaimed in twenty two districts. A large number of Soviet agents were killed in the Saratoff and Smolensk Governments. The Soviet Government at Moscow is seriously alarmed and frantically appealing to the proletariat to resist Admiral Koltchak's advance. Strikes in Petrograd daring March were most acute and were suppressed in most brutal fashion. In one case steam and boiling water wers turned the congregated workmen.
