DEATHS FROM STARVATION IN ARMÉNIA”.“

Londony May 5. *. The Times" correspondent at Igdir in a message dated...... April 12 via Constantinople says the systematic removal and destruction of crops and food supplies by Turkish troops in southern Russian Armenia has left the country ismine- stricken. The supply of food in Igdir is insuficient to keep more than a fraction of the population alive. Many families are feeding on grass and clover and will die unless proper food is supplied. Some twenty-five bodies are brought from the streets daily. Portions of the corpses are in some cases cut off for food by refugees. The correspondent himself has seen in a cemetery the remains of bodies dug up at night and partially consumed by the starving people. Conditions in the surrounding villages are reported to be worse than in- Igdir.

London, May 6.

Beater learns that besides sending troops to Egypt and India in order to relieve troops there who are due for demobilisation, or if necessary to act as reinforcements the garrison of Ireland must be increased. As regards Russia General Denikit, whose position is somewhat weakened by the loss of Odessa and Sebastopol is only now beginning to receive satisfactory supplies of artillery, munitions, tanks, sercplanes and others war material, whereof we are sending Large quantities. The response to the recent appeal for volin- teers for Murmansk and Archangel was extremely gratifying. It is emphasised that we are indulging in no hare brained expedition in North-Hassia but until the very large Russian volunteer army which is now in training is ready it is in- emmbent on us to maintain there a Force sufficient to defend. from Bolshevist vengeance the Russians who aided the Allies. Bolshevist power is very much on the wane and only continues to exist owing to the feebleness of the opposition.

In the House of Commons replying to Mr. Clem Edwards, Mr. Harmsworth stated that the Government now recognised the independence of Finland (cheers) and de facto the Finnish Government.

ALLIED SUCCESS IN MURMANSK,

London, May e

A War Office telegram from Murmansk dated May 5 atates that our troops on May 5 captured Meselskaya on the railway, twenty-five miles south of Urosozero, after strong resistance by three hundred of the enemy and three armoured trains. The success is all the more praiseworthy because it followed a long march and was unassisted by artillery, which it was unable to bring up in time as repairs to the railway ware incomplete. The troops engaged consisted of, Royal Marines, the Slavo-British Legion and small detach- ments of Canadians, French and Americans all of whom showed splendid fighting qualities. Our losses were four killed and four wounded. Our troops are in the highest spirita
