"When did you first apply to the Goverment for a concession to lay down tramway lines in Kowloon?" asked our represent- ative.

the question " asked our repre- sentative.

This would obviate any strengthening of the roads as, of course, the tramway track would "be laid on its own concrete founda- tions, and in lieu of the car mileage payment previously suggested, the Company would maintain the roadway on which the track was laid similarly to what is now done in Hongkong. A royalty on the profits would. of course. be payable to the Government also. To this application the same reply was received that the Government were not prepared at present to consider such a concession."

THE BATHING SEASON.
PUBLIC BEACHES OPEN.
With the advent of warmar weather when more comfort and enjoyment is obtained in the water than out of it, the North Point bathing beach is resuming its old aspect as a popular resort. Already a few eager bathers be seen taking
may to the water. A welcome im- provement is the erection of an additional matshed which, is reserved for the use of the soldiers and sailors. This shed 'which has been put up by the P. W. D. to obviate the congestion which often arose last year in the men's sheds, will be much appreciated by the men of the Service. Besides this shed, there are two other sheds, for male and femalə bathers respectively. These are partitioned into cubicles the use of which can be secured on a payment of 10 cents. There is also another shed, the use of which is free. Fresh water showers are also installed, and a large open
bamboo inclosure)
shrves as a play ground for the
children with their attendants.
Whatever danger may be feared by the less venturesome
bathers is eleminated by the buoys while a life-boat is kept floating of a string of depth-
in readiness for any untoward happening. Of great conveni-
ence to the bathers is the bambon' pier which stretches to a length. of 150 feet from the beach.
The Kennedy Town bathing beach is also now open.

It has been suggested. I think, that the fares now charged by the Tramway Company are too high. and because a large sterling profit was rade in 1918 it is concluded that the public are being exploited. This is a wholly erroneous idea, as in the first place. the sterling profit is very much inflated by reason of the rule of exchange at which the accounts were converted into sterling. The profits are, however, made in dollars. and as over 86 per cent. of the shareholders are in Hongkong they are distributed in dollars, so that the shareholder does not get Charles Howitt & A.
