THE ALEXANDRA CAFE
an-The
before the Apostolic Nuncio had arrived. suddenly a sour smell pervaded the whole church, and the congregation were attacked by acute and painful irritation in the throat and eyes. The sermon had to be discon- tinued, the major part of the congregation rushing frantically to the entrance as the alarm was instantly raised of poisonous gas. Signs also were apparent, such as yellow.damp stains on the floor.
A few minutes afterwards the Nuncio arrived, with his secret- ary, a Milanese priest.
This sturdy aged bishop, though warned of danger, nevertheless insisted on entering the church, in spite of the poisonous fumes that were still being emitted in volumes. His manly action re assured the congregation. about 200 of whom followed him. He donned his vestments, and, making his Way to the altar, took part in the singing of the Litazy, afterwards ad- ministering the Papal Benedic- tion. The dramatic service took twenty minutes, the gas repeating its drastic effects on bishop and congregation alike, and forcing them to tears. The venerable prelate suffered greatly with his eyes for two days, but without serious consequences.
The gas used appears to be identical to that operated by the Austrian army on the Italian front, It is conjectured that some soldier, mingled with the congregation is the culprit, evidently prompted by political motives. The Republican Government has sent its repre- guntative to the bishop to express its regret at this incident.
