NORTHCLIFFE AND KITCHENER.
BY MAJOR-GEN. SIR F. MAURICE.
Owing to my absenes in Paris I have only just had an oppor- tunity of reading Lord Narth- Maike's famous article in the New Illustrated of. Feb. 15 on Mr. Lloyd George. In this article occurs the following passage: *The British nation, is generous towards those who serve it well. It fallows good service to wipe cut past weakness or arror: and it is right in this. It did not recall Mr. Lloyd George's silence in 1915, when it was whispered about, and knoWD for a certainty, that by failing to ad our Armies in France the high explosive for which Sir John
• French (then Commander-in Chief) was repeatedly asking. Lord Kitchener was endangering our chances of victory.”
This is a repetition of the attacks made upon Lord Kit-| chener by Lord Northcliffe a papers in May, 1915. Those attacks ware then so far justifia- ble that they were an attempt to rouse the country to a sense of the dangers of a'sery perilous situation. It is notorious that
that time there Was a grave deficiency of heary guns, *.of high explosive shell, and of
munitions of all kinds. It is, at least, excusable that Lord North- cliffe did not stop to inquire too nicely who was responsible for this state of affairs. Further. Lord Kitchener was then alive, and was able to defend himself if he thought fit to do so. Now he is dead, and Lord Northcliffe has bad ample time in which to investigate the truth of This charge, which he repeats.
KITCHENER'S VISION.
Lord Kitchener was called to the War Office by Mr. Asquith on the outbreak of of war. He was not a magician, and he could uot at a touch provide the vast machinery and establishments re- quired to equip a nation in arda, but he could and did foresee, what no one else foresaw, that in order to win the war we should have to arm and train the manhood of the nation.
