A rumour that China has bought copper to a substantial extent in Japan on behalf of its mints has been circulated in the market lately, and among some operators it was hoped that it would affect the market favour- ably, but it seems to have failed to produce this effect.

Hitherto the price of coal at Panama bas been G.$13 per ton on the Atlantic side and G.14.50 on the Pacific side, but from April the price has been lowered to $11.50 on both sides for steamers making the passage of the capal. For steamers which
