THE, MANILA OLYMPIAD.

JAPAN'S COMPETITORS.

According to a cable advice from Japan received in Manila

K. Fanatsu, of the Mitsui Bussan Kaisha, twonty Japanese athletes are contemplating com- ing to Manila for the Far East- ern meet in May. Mr. Funstsu stated that the cable did not indicate what events the athletes would enter in. It is understood that these athletes are expecting to come voluntarily and therefore will not represent Japan as a team in the Far Eastern meat but that they will be representa- tive of the Japanese.

The cable requested information as to whether the local authorities desired the athletes, who are ready to come. under the conditions cited above. Before cabling a reply Mr. Funatsu took the matter up with Dr. W. W. Marquardt, secretary treasurer of the Far Eastern Athletic Associ ation and of the P. A. A. F., who readily agreed by stat- ing that the Japanese altbetes would be gladly entered in the meet under the conditions set forth Me Funstau has already

bled the Japanese contingent to come, and has also requested in- formation as to what events the twenty or more Japanese athletes will enter in. Mr. Funatsa expects to receive further word in a few days which will give a more detailed account of Japan- ese participation.

It is evident from the informa- tion which Mr. Fùnatsu has received that Japanese athletes will be present, at the Far Eastern meet. This will be pleasant

to local fans

who bave been looking forward to the Far Eastern meet for months past. It is pretty certain that the athletes who will come will be baseball players and swimmers. Japan has always been strong in these two events, and so long as a full dele- gation cannot come it is vers probable that the 20 athletes will be a baseball team and a swimm- ing team.
