JAPAN-NORTH AMERICAN FREIGHT RATES.
Until about January of the present year, the Japanese-North American, litars had sufficient cargo on their homeward voyage. as steel to be shipped from the United States in exchange for Japanese ships had to be carried. Many tramp steamers even went to North America in ballast and carried home the above steel, but recently the shipment of the said steel has ended, and moreover many of the chartered Japanese ships ATB being released. consequently Japanese ships on the Japan-North American service are competing for cargoes both on outward and homeward voyages. Tramp Boats are carrying cargoes at G. $3 on the outward trip and G. $15 on the home.vard.

Usually at this season of the year, the import trade is dull, being too early for summer stocks and rather late for spring goods, but, due to the conditions of Russia and Siberia, it seems that many merchants" are making speculative imports which swell- ed the import business of the port. The Custons receipts during 27th Apr. from Yokohamɩ March were 500,000 yen, break- 2th Apr, from Yokonaming all past records since the establishment of the Dairen Customs. The trade of Dairen has been going on satisfactorily, but it is difficult to say whether the prosperity is due to sporadic causes or is built on a sound foundation.

Dr. Ernest Pearce, Canon and Sab-Dean of Westminster, was consecrated Bishop of Worcester at Westminster Abbey recently The Rev. E. C. Pearce, Master of Corpus Christi College, Cam- bridge, who preached the sermon, said one of the most difficult questions in the diocese was that of the Bishop's résidence. The democratic spirit of the age was against castles for Bishops. The official residence of the Bishops of Worcester is Hartleburg Castle, which is about a dozen miles away from the country town? It is a very larze mediæ ral mansio surrounded by a moat,
