NEW ZEALAND' PURCHASES.
The Union Company of Wel- lington has purchased in Britain two cargo steamers of 8,000 and 8,800 tons deadweight, respec-
be tively, to
named the Waitemats and Wairuna. They left England at the end of February far the Pacific Coast to load for New Zealand and Australia.
A WORTHY APPEAL. Lord Fisher, who is President of the Merchant Seamen's Help Society, has appealed in the Times for funds to meet the immediate needs of the officers and men of the Merchant Service who have been lately repatriated. In many cases the owners (who have no legal liability) are doing nothing for the men, and though it is possible that in the fature their claims for compensation may be considered, it is now that help is wanted.
TOWING LIGHTERS.
The China Navigation 8.8. Kanchow, which left Shanghai on March 29, had in tow the second of the three steel.lighters which the company brought down from Tangku for service on the Yangtse during the shortage of tonnage. The first one to be returned was taken up by the Shuntien. The two tugs which were brought down with them are also being return- ed. No. 4 having left for the North on March 18.
