REPLY TO LABOUR DEPUTATION.

Mr. Shott. Home Secretary, replied recently to a deputation from the Labour Party, which orged the immediate release of the 1,500 conscientions objalis now in prison. le said he regretted he could not make suy the- defiuite statemeul as Li future, but the Secretary for War and himself were giving very t.. the careful cousi·leration question, and hopal very shortly to bring a schem* fefore the Cabinet

It was a muistake in think that all the men at present in prison were evnscientious tuen. Only a couple of days ago he received a petition from a

conscientious objector in Wandsworth Chol complaining of the woahnet of a large number of other men serv- ing soutenes there as conscien- tious "objects and who, the writer declared, ought never to be ralled conscientious objectory.

He wouldassume for the moment, however, that at the men were sincere. It could not be denied that a long perind of imprison- ment was bound to have a certain effect upon the health of the meu concerned, although the figures and statements on this subiect, which considerable publicity had been given, were very och exaggerated.
