AFFAIRS IN KOREA.
A MISSIONARY'S STORY.
on
Writing
the Korean situution, a missionary says :---
Susen, Korea, March 8th, 1919. In this letter let me tell you something of the Independent Hovement in Korea, its cause, character, aim and hope. The cause of this movement lies in the ten years of oppression and cruel treatment, which these people have suffered from their ruthless The lalependent conquerora Movement in its character is

wonderful. It is a peaceful manifestation of the thoughts of the people. From the very beginning strict onders ware issued by the leaders that there should be no fighting or opposition, no matter what was done by the Japanese. The peo- ple have no arms, and where the Christians have been in the ma- jority, in almost every instance they have submitted to arrest and! cruel bearing without opposition. In cases where there has been fighting and bloo.ished the soldiers have first fired on the helpless crowd and 80 infuriated the non-Christian patriots that they have retured viplence for violence. What do the Koreans expect; what is their aim? They think that at this time when the great Powers of the world are considering up pressed people if their sad con- dition is really known they may gain some relief. Their aim is by peaceful means, to let the world know that they are unhappy ander the Japanese rule, that they are not given freedom or justice and that they wh their condi-. tion e' anged. What do they hope for? First, that this awful mili- ry rule in Korea which is like mat of the Huns in Belgium may be remored. They feel that they are taxed without representation, they have no court of appeal where they will receive a har ing, they are not the blessinge of a civil government and are continually under a military des potism which has bien mesterul from the beginning. Ofcours tai. greit hope is that they may have a national life again of their own. and that they may have some of) the rights of free people. They hope for the freedom of speech. and that in the near future these wless soldiers may be remove. rore their latd.
It is a curious coincidence that the Governor-General of Korea at this time is General Hasigawa, the very same man who introduced a reign of terrür in the effort to suppress the Koreans about ten year ago. He has now sent out instructions for the most rigorous treatment of the Koreass, which has results in actual barbarous cruelty which has been seen by scores of mis- sionaries. The writer of this letter during tire past ten -days bas sean acts which
seem like the stories of the Germans in Belgium. Help- less men, women and children have been beaten, kicked and stabbed in the back as well as shot down by soldiers for no other Erime than that of shouting
Hurrah for Korea.
The same things happened ten years agost the beginning of the subjugation of Korea by this same General Has- agawa. The Korean Daily Nece of Sept. 2nd, 1907 says: "At Yorg- san on Saturday evening's Korean and his wife, the latter with a baby tied to her back, were quietly walking along the high- road near the Japanese barmcks, when a Japanese soldier, without any reason, fired at them. In the peaceful little village of Cha Ma-Chang, just a few miles from the east gate of Seoul, the Japanese soldiers on their way to I-chhon and Chang. Chu have caused considerable trouble.
