THE CHINA SOCIETY.
THE HONGKONG
CHINESE INFLUENCE
IN POTTERY,
A meeting of the China Society was hold on the 16th January at the School of Oriental Studies,! Finsbury-circus, EC, when Mr. Bernard Rackham gave an in teresting lecture, illustrated by lantern slides, entitled "Chinese Influences in the Pottery of the West."Mr. H. H. Joseph presided.
The lecturer, in the course of his remarks, said “Anyone who has examined in ourmuseums the pottery use in Europe in an- cient times, and has compared it with the ordinary table ware of to-day, will have observed one striking difference. We should not nowadays consider ourselves fastidious if we refused anything bat pure white porcelain or earth- Venware, as the material for
which the vassals from
we
take our meals. We find it more hygienic and more con- ducive to the enjoyment of our food than any coloured sarthen- were could be, yet we do not re- flect that a few generations ago thipquality of whiteness in pottery was a luxury within the resch only of the wealthier classes in this country, whilst in the time of Shakespeare it was only just be- ginning to be known. The greatim- provement which has taken place in the quality of our pottery we owe to the Chinese. Indeed, I think that, technically speaking. this is the characteristic in which European pottery has been most thoroughly revolutionised by the Chinese influence." Referring to the earliest wares exported from China to Western countries, even before the beginning of the Middle Agas, the lecturer said specimens of early Chinese porcelain were to be found as far afield as the East Coast of Africa, and even inland amongst the ruined cities of Mashonaland. In a collection of fragments recently given to the Victoria and Albert Museum by Major Pearce, British Resident in Zanzibar, and found by him in the neighbouring island of Pemba were a few specimens which dated back undoubtedly to the Sung dynasty.
Mr. Joseph proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the lecturer for his interesting address, which had opened out a new range of thought in connection with that subject. The vote was seconded by Mr. A. M. Townsend, who also proposed a vote of thanks to the chairmaq. Both motions were unanimously passed, and the pro- ceedings then concluded.
