THE UNREST IN GERMANY,
BERLIN WITHOUT NEWSPAPERS.
Landon, March 7.
The latest news from Germany is that the resignation of "the Scheidemann Cabinet is possible. It is believed that Ebers favestre thin, Berlin is at present newspaperless owing ta the strike of printers and compositors, while owing to the complate cessation of railways, motor lorries are carrying people from the suburbs to the city, The National Assembly of Weimar continues to attempt to pacity the ex tremisia by socialistic legislation. It has now enacted a law providing that avery German be given an opportunity of earning a living or be supported if disabled. Spartacists are terrorising Spandau where most of the factories have stopped owing to lack of electricity. A volunteer corps under General Huelser. has occupied all public buildings.
IMPERIAL STANDARD HOISTED.
London, March 2
Semi-official messages from Berlin, dated the evening of March 8, declare the general strike to be practically ended. Underground trains have resumed and compositors and printers have returned to work. The Berlin Trade Union Commission almost unanimously voted in favour of ending Workers Council of the strike, but the decision of the Greater Berlin is not yet known. The plenary assembly of Workers Councils laid down as conditions of ending the strike: no punishment, the release of arrested men, the withdrawal of the military from factories and volunteer troops from Berlin, Strikes at Erfurt have also ended. Martial law is not yet repealed in Berlin. The Spartacista boisted the Imperial Standard on the palace but it was immediately removed.
FIERCE FIGHTING IN BERLIN.
Copenhagen, March 8
A Berlin semi-official message on the evening of March 7 states that insurgent Marines and Militis converted the Admiralty offices into a fort which they defended with other modern weapons. Government machineguns and troops fired three rounds from heavy howitzers hitting the Others building, whereupon some of the defenders fled. pat up the white fag and evacuated the premises, after which civilians plandered them.
A Berlin semi-official message issued on the evening of March states that Government troops cleared the Ale- xander Platz and occupied the Police Presidency. There has been sporadic shooting in the Wilhelms. Plair and at other points. Government troops are now guarding non strikers. The people's Naval Division has been disbanded and fight- ing in the interior of the city has ceased The Government troops losses are comparatively trifling and they have cap- tured many prisoners. The total casualties exceed 400 killed and wounded, including many civilians. A' delegation of
trikers arrived in Weimar to day.
A Berlin semi-official message reports that on Saturday there was a struggle at the Police Prefecture, where the garriam beat back fierce storming attacks lasting for hours. The enemy, who were composed partly of armed workmen of the big factories, deserters, released war prisoners and marines, employed artillery and field howitzers. A small detachment temporarily gained a footing in the south wing but were dislodged During the afternoon the Government troops attacked at all points and won complete screeSSES.. The in- Volunteers entirely cleared the Alexander Platz. surgent militia guard at the Royal Mews Sred on the Gov- ment-troops who stormed the building and disbanded the guard. In consequence of the strike extending to the electric works Berlin is partly lightless to-night.
TROOPS INFECTED WITH BOLSHEVISM.
Paris, March 9, Government agents who have just returned from a month's tour of Germany where they investigated the food situation and the cutisequent spread of Bolshevism have re- ported that conditions in Prussia and Saxony are most serious. The Russians are regarded as liberators and the possibility of a junction between the German and Russian forces on the East frant is nowise remote. Marshal Hindeo- burg's army, which is nearly two bundred thousand men, will be more than sufficient to check the Bolshevik danger if the troops are not already impregnated with Bolshevism, but there is not a single solid regiment in Germany.
CRISIS SAID TO BE PASSED.
London, March 10
A German wireless message, dated Mar. 9. estimates the casualties in Berlin at a thousand. It says if the firïal re- sistance is not yet completely broken the crisis is safely passed. After the interior of the city was cleared on Satur- day the Spartacists fought in the suburbs. Their principal fortress was the Bostzow Brewery which the Government troops are bombarding with heavy howitzers directed by airmen while aeroplanes are bombing the brewery. Many houses in Alexander Platz neighbourhood collapsed as a result of the previous day's bombardments.
SITUATION STILL SERIOUS.
London, March 13. Although the main efforts of the Spartacists in Berlin hare best defeated the latest news shown that the general situation in Germany continues to disquiet the Government. Sixteen collieries in Bilesia have struck. A plot fomented by Spartacists from Berlin was discovered in Breslau where Government troops occupied public buildings to prevent their seizure, Fourteen thousand miners in the coal basins of Barony have struck. An outbreak is apprehended at Him- borg. Correspondents at Berlin depict the continuance of the terror of March 9. There is artillerying, machine-gunning and air-bombing in the suburbs where the Spartacists are still holding out
PROGRESS TOWARDS PEACE.
Paris, March 11.
Yesterday in the history of the Peace Conference will rank as a crucial date when the civilized world learns the measures adopted to reduce Germany to impotency. The Supreme War Council shaped and agreed upon the military terms. Germany's army will be reduced to 100,000 men. The so called Foch-Lloyd George programme would have limit- ed the enemy to a standing army of 140,000 but the Supreme Council called for reduction. America, Great Britain, France and Italy are now in perfect accord on virtually every clapse of the forthcoming treaty, military, naval, territorial, inancial and economic. The speed and harmony, of the negotiations in the last few days surprised the most optimistic expectations. - Havaa
Paris, March 12
The progress made by the Conference in the last few days justifies the hope that the whole technical -work of pesce making may be completed far earlier than anticipated.
President Wilson will land in Brest on Thursday, arriv- ing in Paris on Friday morning. Signor Orlando arrived in Paris yesterday.-Havas.
