SOLDIER TALK.
BY KATHARINE TYNAN.
We had known him all through the summer, and had nursed him through an attack of flu when all the camp was down and the weather had broken, and even the doctors were hors de combat. Hei had been a most gentle, amenable little patient he is fire foot ten and half but we always talked of him as "Little" Eric. He carries three wound stripes, having been shot through the lung, the neck, and the arm, and he is the last of three boys.
His friend who is smashed to pieces he was in the Air Service. fell with his seroplane on to the roof of a building, and from that into a concreted school play- ground with the machine on top of him, both legs broken, nose and jew broken, one foot a mass of pulp, but somehow wonderfully mended, because of his great heart and spirit-used to come and play baby games with Eric while he lay abed, peeping at him from behind doors, while the invalid wriggled with laughter. Ther were so piteously young.
A "GOOD LITTLE BOY During those ten day's and all through the wieks following when he came in and out to tea and tennis, or for an informal meal, with the air I loved to see in him of being somewhat a son of the house. he never seemed anything but a dear, good little box.
I think in all that time he never said anything memorable. Then one afternoon Armentieres and Lens were mentioned. Only then I began to discover that Erie had
hings to tell beyond the ways of Susan his bulldog.
A little later, after a local race- meeting he talked horses with a group of soldiers by the fire, and his voice had become a robust, manly voice as he talked with knowledge of the things he knew,
A few days later be brought - a new purchase to show us - Mary, a brown mare and a most uneasy creature, extremely anxi- ous to kick out at any body she could. His friend, Leonard, who had tried and trained race-horses before the war, was with him. Leonard, although he has nothing much to grip with but his thights, can still do anything with a horse.
Eric dearly loves Mary, the mare, because he only can saddle her and because her former owners told him that she was an ill-tempered brute. To see Eric holding on to Mary, with his cheek against hers, while she dances all over the gravel sweep. hoping to get near enough_to someone to kick, is a sight.
WAR TALK.
"You know, Eric, you have lots to tell." I say across the dinner- table.
It must have been because he did not, guess we would be interested, for he begins to talk quite freely. He tells about Armentiers, and he go38 on to Ypres. He remembers Ypres. in 1915. It was being shelled constantly. No one minded.
Now and again there was а scamper, and the Market Square. which the Boche seemed to have located, would be empty till the shell exploded. Then everyone would come back.
"When I returned in 1917 it was flat: black, and fat....
"The French soldiers? Splendid fellows! In 1915 they used to get fearfully tired of the trenches. I've known them leave a tranch empty, and go off to an estaminet for a glass of beer.
When they came back the Boche was in the trench. They got it back, and a bit more.
