GENERAL NEWS,

KUHO OF DUMARU DISASTER.

The as. Dumarn disaster which ocurred off of Guam last October was brought to mind again when the Collector of Customs, Aldacess, received a cable from Mr. J.F. Jewell, American Consul at Batavia, to the effect that part of the stern of the steamar, together with a quantity of linen marked "U. S. S. B., S. S. Damaru, had been washed ashare on the northern part of the island of Hiri: The stern of the boat, which still carried its rudder, was badly burned, according to the cable,

ITALIAN EMBASSY IN TOKYO BURNT.

Fire broke out recently in one of the rooms of the Italian Embassy at Kasamigaseki, Tokyo, and before the outbreak was got under control the grester portion of the Embassy building

had

been destroyed. It is understood that all important documents were safely taken ont. At the time of the outbreak the Italian Ambassador was absent in Yokohama. It seems that the outbreak originated in a stove, and the flames had already got a firm hold upon the building before it was noticed by anyone. When the firemen arrived on the scene the whole building was aflame, and their efforts were of little avail. The building was erected some thirty years ago and the damage is pai at about T20,000.

Three or four months is regarded by members of the Aero Club as a reasonable time for the installation of sa aero service out of Manila, and the enthusiasm is so intense on the subject that the club is already figuring on solving very knotty transportation problems of the Philippines by means of regular air lipes to remote parts of Luzon and probably "other islands.

Writing from Athens at the end of November, an American vice-consul mentions that the Consulate-General at that port from time to time during the past four years reported on the pro- gress of the railway line which would link Old Grece to the rest of Europe. The completion of this strip was announced nearly two years ago, bat owing to the war no international use thereof has been possible. The present epidemic of in- fluenza has been marked by two peculiar features the great and very fatal occurrence of paeum- onia as a complication, and the aot very infrequent cases of sud- den collapse in the midst of life's asnal activities, followed by almost immediate death. Both these features have been the occasion of speculation among the lay public and to some extent in the press. It has been more than once suggested that some disease other than those familiar to

Western populations present, and we have met various rumours that the disease was ia truth pneumonic plague, and taat the truth has been suppress- od with a view to the avoidance of panic.

Now it is obvious that if this were the case the authorities would be guilty of criminal stupidity in allowing a disease of this type to prevail with no at- tempt at its control, in order to avoid a supposed danger of panic among a population exceedingly anlikely to be affected in this way.

The bath, however, néeus no qualification or suppression, for the facts are clear and thoroughly ascertained., The micro-organisms of plague and influenza are both of them familiar: they are entirely dis- tinct in type, and no possible confusion could arise in distin-| guishing between them. Far- ther, the organism of plague can be very certainly obtained from its victims, and though the influenza bacillus is of more, "shy" growth, its recovery by

epidemic in France some doubt 26, Des Voeux Road Central did indeed exist as to the presence of a true inflenza infection, but this has since been entirely resolved with better methods. Both in the army and among the civil population it has now been shown to an increasing extent that the organism of influenza can be found in a high percentage of all cases investigated.

There is по possible doubt that the primary disease is really influenza. The question of the cause of the accompanying pneumonia has also been answered. No such prevalence of pneumonis has occurred in previous epidemics, and the new factor is the pre- sence of a "mixed infection.'
