SOLDIER UNDERGRADUATES, British universities are prepar-1 ing to receive a heat of American soldier-studenta. A scheme hasi already been drawn up by the Educational Commission of the United States army în coujunet- ion with the university authori Lies of England, Scotland, sad Wales. An American nu- iversity professor now serving with his country's Y.M.C.A. said that young men from the varsities and colleges threw up their studies to join the colours, and in the American army to-day. there are no fewer than 17,000 teachers. Anxious that these students should not lose touch with their studies, the Army Eduestions Commission got to work in France, and 1,500 schools have been established behind the lines. The nam- ber is expected soo3 to reach 3,000. A quarter of a mil- lion soldier-students of the US. army have thus been parsing their studies as well as fighting. Oce anil
quarter million American soldiers are expected to remain temporarily in Europe. and the plan is to select those most likely to profit, and send them on educational leave to British Universities for two terms.

ACTRESSES' DRESS SECRETS. Lady Tree confessed her curiosity as to the dress secrets of well-known actresses, in mak- ing an appeal on behalf of the Theatrical Ladies' Guild at the St. James's Theatre recently for gifts f cast-off clothing..
Dress" she said. "basa peculiar fascination for women that is not shared by men. I can't imagine Mr. H. B. Irving lying awake all Įnight puzzling as to the maker of the greatcoats Mr. Heary Aialey wears. Yet often lie awake wondering who makes Miss Irene Vanbrugh's wonderful hats. But do you think she will tell me? Not a bit; it is her dearest secret! "I often have bad nights wondering who makes Miss Gladys Cooper's coats: and skirts, and when I ask her the question she says, 'Oh, do you like it, dear? My maid made it for me. That's as far as I get." Dame May Whitty said they had the authority of Sir James Barrie for saving that an actress W3S never more than 29 years of age. That tradition made it very awkward for actresses who wished to claim the vote.

The contrast between Budapest and Vienna is interesting. Vien- ua is starving, and the coal shortage threatens an economic catastrophe, whereas Budapest possesses abundance of foodstuffs, and prices are comparatively reasonable. I saw milk, butter, sugar, and white bread to-day for the first time for over three weeks, writes a correspondent to a Home paper. The once-powerful. Magyar nation is today in a lamentable plight. Czechs from the North, Rumaniaus frunt the South-East, and Serbs from the South have crossed its frontiers and are rapilly ad- vancing. Great tracts of Hung- arian territory are in the grip of the invader. But life SWEDEN AND THE BOLSHEVIKS, Budapest was never gayer. The The Swedish Government has Lotels and restaurants are crowd- recalled its Consular and Diploed, there tango teas and all-night matic representatives from Russia, except two officials at the Lega- tion. M. Vorowsky, the Soviet Government representative at Stockholm, baring abused the righ: of dispatching and receiving couriers in order to facilitate the transmission from Russia of Bol- sherist literature, the Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs has infomed him that he will not be in fature allowed to enjoy the privileges of using diplomatic couriers, stating at the same time that he presumes that f. Vorow- sky and the other member of the Soviet Legation will leave Sweden. All Swedes in Russis have been urged to return to Sweden.

Fleet, together with portraits of naval heroes and leaders. Com- mander Norman Wilkinson, Major Ambrose McEvoy, Major Charles Pears, Major Francis Dodd, Capt. Philip Connard, A.R.A., Lieut. Allfree, Mr. Glyn Philpot, ARA., Mr. Nelson Dawson, and Sir John Lavery. RA., were the artists chosen. The result of their work is a most imposing collection of naval pictures. London is to have an opportunity of seeing them at the Sea-Power Exhibition at the Grosvenor Gallery, which is to be opened on Wedensday by the Duke of Connaught.
A specially interesting part of the collection is the group of fifty pictures which Sir John Lavery | is presenting to the nation with the request that they may find s home in the Imperial War Museum. Sir John's work began before that of the other artists, i his earliest naval picture being that of the Forth Bridge in 1914. It was his part in the interest- ing scheme of making these pictorial records of the work of the Navy to paint the chief characteristics of the various bases of the Fleet. And so we have pictures of Scapa, where the German Fleet is now lying; of the embarkation of American troops in a camouflaged troop ship zt Southampton; the American battle squadron in the Firth: Rosyth: the submarines at Harwich; the monitors at Dover; a convoy in the North Sea, painted from an airship; and mine- the patrol boats and sweepers at Granton. Sir John's last picture is that of the arrival of the German delegates on the quarter deck of the Queen

The artist shows them walking along the deck towards the companion way. which leads to the cabin where the conference was held. In the foreground stands & sentry. Behind, seen through the darkness again, are the guns of the Queen Elizabeth.
Besides this historic picture, there is another, which will not be finished for some months, of the actual conference between the German delegates and Admir-|| al Beatty. For this picture also studies were made at the time. It was a foggy day, the lamps were lighted, and the delegates are seen sitting at the conference table, at which the terms of the great surrender were finally com- pleted...

him lying conscious, and he died in that condition. In a pathetic letter to his wife the artist wrote: "I am so miserably ill and weak and so conscious of the impossibility of getting well that I want to write it down that if anything happens to me suddenly my last thought was of you, my beloved. You have been the sweetest, most tender, and unselfish wife that ever a man had, and your patience has been divine. Even you cannot understand how I

So, my darling, it is best that I should die and release you from the growing burden of my health. Try to re- member our happy days together." Mr. Halkett will be missed by many in the world of art and journalism. He was well-known to the public by his drawings and caricatures in "Panch" and other journals. His special gift was political caricatures, and his initials, "G. R. H.," were familiar to readers of the Pall Mall Gazette and the Pall Mall Magazine.
