There may be some few of us who can subscribe to Dr. John- son's dictum that it is unworthy of the dignity of a human being to be affected by the state of the atmosphere. But most of us are bound to feel more or less cheered ar depressed according as our sky. is radiant or clouded, especially during the time of the year when we may ordinarily expect sunshine. The present season has been disappointing in this respect, and many are conscious of a detri- mental influence upon health and spirits. Our usual period of bright and brilliant weather has on the whole been damp and dark Instead of sunny days we have had over us d'rarely broken canopy of clouds, and residents have been ruefully searching their memories to find a season like it. All this brings certain familiar leasons to our remembrance, a few of which I shall touch upon.

The first of these is just the old reminder of man's necessary limitations. We are made to realise how powerless we are, with all our growth in knowledge, when the great operations of nature and providence are in question. We "go mourning without the sun," and how
