Peking, Jan. 4.

The subject of the deportation of Germans from China has been revived with the prospect of action t being taken at fairly early i date: Ir wit be remembered that in the summer of last year arrangements had been completed for the transportation of the Germans in China to Australia, but at the last moment these had to be cancelled. Now, I understand. the Chin- 880 Government are offering! practically no objection. They suggested that a commencement! might be made with the repatria- tion of those interned in temples in the Western Hills, some 120 in all, but on it being pointed out; that this was too small a number on which to waste one steamer China agreed to the deportation of

in Shanghai. China foresees considerable advantages in ger ting rid of the Germans, for it will enable her to dictate the conditions on which she will enter iate peace terms with Germany and the conditions under which the Germans will be permitted to enter this country. It may be the first step towards the long road to ultimate abolition of extra-territoriality with the re- covers of full sovereignty.

This morning was witnessed a run on the Yokohama Specie Bank. It might have happened earlier had the foreign banks not been closed for the New Year holidays until to-day. Obviously the scare which caused a flutter in Shanghai at the beginning of the week has been transmitted to Peking with the result that Jap anese notes are taboo and that "the Yokohama Specie Bank had to pay out $12,000 jo silver within two hours. Whoever spread the report of the failures of the Sever- al business houses in Japan was no friend of that country.

Chinese have taken unusual pride iri the Peking-Kelgan Railway with its extension to Suiguan, which was built by Chinese engineers and without foreign capital. It was the sole absolutely Chinese-owned rail- way in the country. Now that character has been to some extent lost by the introduction of Japanese capital for the purposes of financing the line.. A short term loan of four million dollars was floated towards the close of last year, but of the required sura unly one million was subscribed.

result which led the pro-Japanese director General Tinge, to borrow the balance of three millions from Japanese sources. pledging the unsold bonds at the low price of 85, which gave opportunity for large commissions, but worse still are the conditions which provide that if railway material be required during the currency of the loan it shall be bought from this firm and if further loans be needed the firm in question shall be given the option.

Apparently the announcement that several American brewers were coming to China with the intention of laying down huge brewing plants has roused a storm of opposition which is even greater than that against opium. The American Legation has re- ceived so many protests that it is unable to answer them in detail.

A Japanese newspaper publish- ed in Tientsin and circulating here prints an interesting article from a distinguished Japanese professor advocating a Sino Japanese offensive and de. fensive alliance in view .of the growth of the American, British and French armies and navies. The two brother nations are advised to co-operate for their mutual! advantage, and China is invited! to consider the advantage, of leaning upon Japan for military support so that she may eliminate
