Income Tax Deduction" From Awards.
The injustice of deducting income tax from awards to merchant captains and officers for highly meritorious services at sea is a matter which the Imperial Merchant Service Guild took up some time ago with a satisfactory result. But even now the removal of this injustice does not seem to be generally known amongst income tax cfficials in different places. A well-known shipmaster has recently brought to the attention of the Guild, of which he is a member, that out of an award of one hundred guiness in recognition. of meritorious services a substantial amount" had been deducted for income tax. The Guild have taken this in hand. and are now informed by the Board of Inland Revenue that they will be prepared to refund to this gentleman the sum of £14 19 d.
Proposed Amalgamation of Nautical Societies.
The announcement that at the recent annual meeting of the British Shipmasters" and Officer's Protection Society, Sunderland, a "resolution had been adopted, with one dissentient only, proposing amalgamation with the Imperial Merchant Service Guild, hag excited a great deal of favourable comment amongst members cf the profession which these influential bodies represent. If another which has contributed of there is one thing more than late to the material advantage of the navigating and engineer officers it is the way they have co-operated together and stood shoulder to shoulderin connection with matters concerning their com.non and mutual interests. This combination has resulted in very effective driving power and concentration of energy and effort At the conclusion of the discussion on the motion re amalgamation which took place at the meeting of the Sunderland society, Captain Uavidson, the présilent, and one of the best known veterans of the profession, stated that "ry coming to the Guild they would gain security,
strength and safety" state- ment which evoked loud applause,
