A Barber's Former Name. At Bow-streak Police Court recently before Mr. Garrett, Ernest Emil Bobenker, of German nationality, and Charles Howard,

trying on business as "The Carnon-street Toilet Saloon,' Osanon street, were summoned for omitting in particulars farnish ed them in connection with an application for registration under the Business Names Act the former Christian names «sod szrokme of the defendant Howard. It was alleged by the prosecution that Howard was formerly known as Carl Heinrich Gieske, he being the son of a German who was naturalised a British subject in 1874. Mr. Stephen Lynch, for the defence, pleaded that the omission complained of had arisen through inadvertence, and not from any intention to evade the law. He mentioned that both the defendants bad. relatives saving with the British forces in the war. Howard had married ab Englishwoman, and him. daughter was married to a British soldier. Mr. Garrest said that the whale object of the Act was to ascure that the poet bistory of asy man carrying on, business might be traced. Is the return made by the defendants it was stated that Howard had never borne say different name. That "statement was abolutely fales, and calculat ed to defeat the Aot by conceal- ing the fact that Howard had once torne's German name. He! therefore ordered each defendant' fine of 225 and to pay a five guiness costs,
