NEW OFFENSIVE IN FRANCE.
ն
Leon in Flame &
Paris, Oct. & "Laon is in flames. The west front is quieter. The Germans are making desperate efforts to hold the French on the Saippe. Northward runs the line of a series of fortresses to Mezieres; a most important junction between North and East France, about 30 miles.. Berry-ah-Bac has been captured. The Germans are defending Lillo with heary guns. The disorganization of the German Army is most pronounced. Units are hopelessly mixed. Looting in Cambrai, extended even to the cathedral and other churches. Sol- diers were granted formal permission to plunder.-Hayes.
Terrible Hammering for the Germans."
London, Oct. 8. Reuter's Correspondent at British Headquarters, write ing last evening, says: Over sixteen 'enemy divisions to-day were given a terrible hammering by the Third and Fourth Armies, with whom are strong American units, and it is certain that a tremendous toll is being levied upon the dwindling German man-power. Operations at Cambrai and St. Quentin constituted a series of battles developing one. after another all night and at daybreak to-day (Sth inst) at least fifteen miles of the British front was ablaze with in-. fantry attacks. We generally progressed rapidly, although sticky points were encountered. The Welsh had the toughest task of breaking through the remainder of the Beaurevoir- Masnieres line; but once the Germans were driven, out and the Welshmen reached the open the enemy broke.
The Now Zealanders carried Esces, prismering over 700 in the finest form. German Tanks were of a fairly fast type, but the gunners soon got on top of them assisted by our lowflying sirmen. The Americans have done brilliantly and prisonered 1,600 is capturing Promont We are now well out in the open rolling country. Our casualties' are relatively light.

London, Oct. 9:
Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig states: The Third and Fourth Armics resumed the attack this morning, progressing rapidly everywhere. We entered Cambrai, and prisonered 8,000 yesterday.
Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig reports, We further progressed last evening eastward of Sequenart and in the direction of Bohain and Maritz. We reached the western outskirts of Jalincourt and gained the line of the La Targ ette-Cambrai road, capturing Forenville.
"The Third and Fourth Armies at five thirty, this morning reattacked on the whole of their front, rapidly progressing. everywhere.
Shortly after mid-night the Canadians attacked porthward of Cambrai Ramillies was captured and the crossings of Canal-de-Lescaut were secured in the neighbourhood of Ramil- lies. We have entered 'Cambrai. Yesterday's prisoners ex- ceed 8.000 with many guns.
The French Attack.
London, Oct. 8.
A French communiqué státes: North-easy of St. Quentin the French, in conjunction with the Britisn, attacked this morning on a front of ten kilometres. Despite stubborn resistance we penetrated strong positions and made im- farm and reached the south-western outskirts of Essigny-le Petit. We conquered the woods east of Tilloy, Hill 134, and portant progress. We captured Fanaine Uterte and Belletour the village of Rauvroy" So far we bave taken over twelve hundred prisoners, including five hundred-captured at Belle. eour farm.
On the Suippe front fighting enntinued all day. The Germans strove vigorously to recover the captured positions. Their counter-attacks on the norur bank against Örainville and the Post-Givart bridgehead was repulsed. Further east the enemy several times unsuccessfully attempted to eject us from Bazancourt.
·
North of Ames the Franen-Americans gained fresh suc cesses. Supported by Tanks they drove back the enemy over three kilometres north of St. Pierre-Aarnes. On the right bank of the Aisne we captured the plateau north-cast of Ontry and reached the southern outskirts of Lancon, tak- ing numerous prisoners, e
Reuter's correspondent at the French Headquarters, writing on the afternoon of Tuesday, says: There was an ex tension of the battle east of the Meuse and the entire front is active front Roulers to Woevre. The offensive is momentarily beaviest on three main sectors corresponding with the wings and centre, namely Cambrai-St, Quentin, the Suippes and the Mense. Marshal Foch in the intermediate zones con- teats himself with steady, pressure for the moment. General Mangin between the Oise and the Aisne is vigilantly follow----- ing every movement of the enemy. The battle in eastern Champagne has died down. Here the Germans have thrown in reserves against our troops. who have been fighting un- interruptedly for weeks. Marshal Foch counters by extending the battle across the Meuse with the aid of vast American reserves and the Germans must again find reinforcements.
ij What the Americas Have Do
London, Oct. 8. Heater's correspondent at American Headquarters, writ ing on Tuesday, at noon, says: Notable progress" was made yesterday in the direction where the gain of ground is essen. tial to our further advance. "The capture of the hill above Chatalchehery is squeezing out the enemy still lurking in the centre of Argonne, south of Grandpre. The most in- teresting event of the day was the extrication of a battalion which has been isolated and surrounded by the enemy in Argonne Forest for the past five days. In its advance it, lost touch with the troops on either side and the enemy trickling between severed the connection. Its plight was known and several attempts were made by the French and ourselves to relieve it, bat, they were unsuccessful. Air- planes swooping down in the dense forest dropped food and ammunition baskets and carrier-pigeons at the place it was supposed to be, but last night the advance of our centro rescued the battalion.
An American official message states: We captured Cornay and against stubborn fighting continued to advance in Argonne Forest. The French and Americans eastward of the Mouse brilliantly attacked in the vicinity of Bois-des- Capres and Bois-de-Aumont and occupied Consenvoye, Brabant, Baumont, Beaumont and drove the enemy well beyond them. We, in co-operation with the French astride the Meuse, are pushing back the enemy from the scene of the desperate struggles for Verdun. To-day's total prisoners exceed 3,000 whereof 1.600 were taken by the French east- ward of the Meuse: This command has prisonered over 4000 in the last few days. The Frenchs captured eighteen. heavy trenchmortars,
