GERMAN SUBMARINE ATROCITY.

London, Aug. 28. Harrowing details are published of the sinking of the French steamer Lydians off the north coast of Spain on 16th July whilst returning from Baku The crew were largely Cingalese. A submarine torpedoed the vessel without warn- ing, billing several of the crew. A second torpedo then struck the vessel while a boat was being lowered. "The wreckage tore the boat from the davite, but the boat kept her keel "whereupon the submarine rammed and cut ner in two, then turned and rammed the other boat. The Captain' and a young woman passenger were killed by the impact. The mar derers then endeavoured to sink the remaining survivors who were on ́s raft, at first unsuccessfully. When one of the ship's officers tried, to swim to the steamer from the raft the submarine turned and cut him up with its propeller. After finally disposing of the Lydiana by shelling the sub- marine made a sixth and successful attempt to ran the raft. Amid the laughter of the submarines the bloody work was thus completed. The submarine then turned east- wards and disappeared. The "neroic contest"- lasted for two hours. Out of forty-six aboard the steamer eight sur- vivors were rescued.

RECRUITING IN IRELAND.

London, Aug, 28. The prospects of the Irish voluntary recruiting campaign are improving daily. The new machinery promisca to move amoothly and with good effect and there is reason to believe "that as a result of the first fortnight's voluntary effort under the new regime the response will be more than equal to that made dunng the thrée months proceding the initia- tion of the scheme. Recruiting meetings have had a good affect in Dublin and Belfast, Recruiting is proceeding at Waterford-encouragingly and four prominent local Sinn Feiners have enrolled..
