the harbour authorities have decided to request the Govern- ment to place ten more buoys in the harbour, and have drafted su appropriation for inclusion in the Budget. Before the war the cost of installing a buoy was about Y15,000, but it is now estimated at Y120,000.

Dutch Shipping in 1917.

The report of the Stoomvart Maatschappij Nederland states that the year 1917 was ne of the inost difficult in the company's experience. Bhipping to the colonies was reduced to a kminimum. From Amsterdain only seven vessels were des- patched namely, five cargo steamers and two mail steamers, while the mail steamer Grotlus was sent with pass ngers only through the Panama Canal. The company's steamers Bawean and Ambon took cargo in London for India. The arrivals in Holland from the Dutch East Indies comprised three merchantmen and two mail steamers, while the mail steamer Prinses Juliana, on the homeward voyage with passenge's and carge, was held. up at Suez owing to the presence of submarines in the Mediter ranean, and was finally ordered back to the ladies. One of the company's steamers participated› in the traffic of the Java Pacific Line, where there was a super. abundance of cargo on offer. The sme may be said of the Java- San Francisco Line, in which six of the company's mail steamers were entazed. The service of the Java-Bengal Line was maintain- ed in the usual manner. Of this line. Java was in more need than ever in 1917, as the total number

considerably lessened. In the last half of 1917 the company paced six extra vessels on that berth with a view to dealing with the heavy sugar traffic and supplying the colonies" big demand for rice from Rangoon, and fourteen round voyages were made on this route as compared with eleven in 19.6.

Arrivals and Departures from the Company's Wharf (near of ships using the route was Blake Pier).
