A Remarkable Woman's Death.

The death is announced from Naples of the famous medium Etapis Pallading, at the age of

64:

Espis Palladino had been called the despair of science.". She was unquestionably frit among spiritualistic mediams, and although there were those, including Mr. Maakelyne, who bluntly declared her a fraud, she was able to convince paychologiata like Lombroso and Moreslli and scientista like Schiaparelli, Flammarion, and Mr. and Mrs. Carie that ebe endowed with was inexplicable powers. Sir Oliver Lodge was similarly deeply im- preeeed with her performances. She bezelf, it should be noted, claimed to be "merely an instru ment," and not to be able to pro- duce at will the phenomena which made her world-famous, but this "statement was in contradiction of the feats of levitation, etc., which she performed on request, and it is beyond ofallenge that she re- sorted to trickery.

Her name first came before the scientific world in 1888, but sho is stated to have discovered her mysterious gifta 20 years pre- viously, when she was only 14 She visited Eagland in 1895, and gave a number of seances at Cambridge, under the direction, of Mr. Myera(secretary of the Society for Payohical Research), Professor and Mrs. Sidgwick, Dr. Ri. chard Hodgson, and others. Mr. Myers, at any rate, remained un convinced. Professor Lombroso, who began bis investigations in 1891, ascerted positively that she caused the spirit of his dead! mother to appear and embrace him. Lambrose was definitely converted through her to a belief in spiritualism.
