A Shipowner's Estate,
Mr. Robt. Woodliffe Simpson, of Ingleside, Eaglescliffe, ship owner, shipbroker and marchant, loft estate valued at £109,342 13 3d, with net personalty $105,104 119 91. Amonget numerous bequests to individuals and institutions he left $200 to the Port of Hull Society's Sailors' and Orphans' Homes. The balk of his property he left to his wife and family.
Wits as Conscientious Objector. A woman who accompanied her husband at a recent meeting of the Hall Tribunal said she was s conscientious objector, and whe` would not have her husband back if he killed a man. She added that her husband could not fight. The chairman asked the man to speak for himesli, and be replied that he never could fight. The case was adjourned for the man to reply to the usual printed questions put to objectors.
Mothers' Work for the State.
One of the grounde on which a wife appealed to Middlesex -Tribunal recently against the withdrawal of ber husband's exemption was that she herself bad done service to the State as the mother of eix obildren. She also said her health was weak. The local tribunal had held that the husband had not complied with their order to obtain work of national importance. The appeal tribunal, however, decided that the exemption should con. tinus.
800 Per Cent. Profiteering. What the magistrate at the Bouth-Western Police Court recently described sa colossal ́profits" seem to have been made by the Oriental Candle Company, of Wandsworth. With the manager, the company W68 obarged with selling saper phosphate of lime, used by Allotment-holders, at a price which worked out at £56 per ton. whereas the maximum was 26 148. Profiteering was, said pro- secuting counsel, indulged in to the extent of 800 per cent. The explanation cffered was that there had been great difficulty in ob- taining a copy of the Order con- taining the price. A fine of $20 and 10 guiness costs was imposed.
