A semi-official message from Rome says the importance of the access in Albania can only be realised by a knowledge of the opography of the country. Unlike most other war theatres, occupa- tion of territory can only be carried out by detachments holding isolated tactical points. London, July 12, Benter's correspondent at Rome (says the Italian advance in Albania, with French assistance in the centre, Greeks on the right Bank and British naval support, is producing a great political as well as military effect throughout the Balkans. All the oppressed Austrian nationalities are anxious to join in the fight. The latter declare that "Austria is the Achilles heel of the enemy Alliance," and if the Allies succeed in attacking this vulnerable spot, the whole Austro German compas: may collapse like a pack of cards.

The Australians to-day entered the German lines in the neighbourhood of Merrie. They penetrated a considerable; depth, and captured over, saverly prisoners and a number of machine-guns.

Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig reports:We osptured 120 prisoners and ten machine-guns in Thursday's enterprise south- weet of Merris. We repulsed an attempted raid to the south of Bucquoy and raided so the north-east of Merris, near Meteren and in the vicinity of Hamel, taking prisoners.

A French communique states: -We scoentassed our progress to the north of Chavagny and east of Naverolisa, occupying the village of Longport and Javage Farm. We carried out coapa-de-msin north of Montdidier, in Champagne, and took fifteen prisoners. There is lively enemy artillery tiring on the right bank of the Mease.

The Press Bureau announces:-The Air Force, co-operating with the Navy, from the 8th to the 10th instant dropped eight toas of bombs on enemy d ́oks and worka and half a ton Constantinople on the 7th instant. Kalelibarges bridge and station, in Bulgaria, on which a quarter of a ton of bomba waa dropped recently, was badly damaged.
