century, more or less, ago of our smart Trilling vessels being in comifland of American youths who had not get attained their macority? an example in particular being the American ship-Lesjamin, on a royare from Boston bound for Calcutta, India, via the Cape of Good Hope, in 1793. This vessel was commanded by Nathaniel Silsbee of Salem, Mass, who was not yet 19 years of age at the time. This young master and embryo statesman, for he was afterward elected a United States Senator from Massachusetts, had followed the sea since he was 14, making his first voyage from. Salem to Baltimore as captain's clark. At 28 he had ar cumulated" a fortune and at 36 was the head of the largest-American shipping house in China. The voyage of the Benjamin was never. com. pleted, for while at Mauritius ber commander received word of the breaking out of war between France and England andthe-sold the Benjamin's cargo at a dazzl- ing 'prefit, turning - the paper currency received into Spanish dollars, which increased three times in value in six months. The remainder of this fortunate voyage was equally as profitable. It ex er dels far as the Cape of Good Hope; and when the ship reached her home port at the end of ten months, Capt.in Silsbee, had earned a net profit of over 100 per cent, on his ship and cargo.

Alexander Mitchell, of the 6.5. Venetia, the Committee of Lloyd's. Silver Meal and Certificate for meritor ions services in endeavouring to save his vessel after being torpedoed. In presenting the medal and certificate; Mr. Adam/ said the public did not fully, realise what the country owed to the men of the Mercantile Marine in carrying on their work in face of the innumerable dangers and and difficulties of the sess through enemy submarines and mines. It was gratifying to be able to do honour to one of these men and in doing so they wished, to remember all those who man' our ships and uphold so worthily the great record of the profession. The following are the circum- stpaces attending the endeavours. made to save the steamer: On the 9th December," 1917, Captain Mitobell left the Tyne with a cargo of -chal bound for the Mediterranean. On the afternoon of this day the steamer was torpedoed off Whitby. As the steamer was in danger of sinking the captain and crew took to the boats and came ashores It was found, however, that the steamer- was only sinking at a very slow. rate, and aptain Mitchell and the chief engineer with some of the crew and apprentices went MATHESON & CO., LTD. back to the steamer The chief engineer worked the engines eneral Managers,
