THE INDIAN FRONTIER EITUATION.....

London, May 18

The "Times" correspondent at Simla reports that Sir George Boos-Keppel speaking at a war meeting at Peshawar, stated that the frontier had been quieter since the outbreak of war than it had been for four years before. The Viceroy had stated that the relations with the Ameer of Afghanistan' had never been more cordial. The representatives attending the meeting had seen for themselves how the Ameer kept his country peaceful and prosperous when the rest of the world was shame. Sir George Boos-Keppel added that be was proad of the recruiting in the frontier province which had one man in twelve of military age serving.

CHURCH OF ENTLAND REFORM,

London, May 19.

The report of the Archbishops' Committee on the Re form of the Church of England recommends. "inter alia" limited instead of lifelong incumbencies, the right of pari- shioners to be consulted acent the appointment of incum bants, a minimum stipend of £400 yearly for an incumbent and £200 for unbeneficed clergy who are five years in orders and the establishment of Parish Councils. An Advisory Com- mittee should help the Premier in the selection of bishops; houses assigned to bishops should no longer be called palaces or castles, their size and importance should be modified. Women should be entitled to vote for and serve on all coun- cils of the Church which include the laity,

THE EAST AFRICAN CAMPAIGN.

London, May 18.

An East Africa official message states: There was severs fighting on 5th May' westward of Nanungu where 'the bulk of the German foros. is concentrated. A small body of the King's African Rifles surprised an important German camp, entered it and fired the hata. The enemy strongly-counter. attacked heavily engaging our force all day long at the closest quarters. We eventually completely defeated the enemy driving him off north-eastward with severe losses. General von Lettow Vorbeck commanded the enemy forcés. Our convergent movement on Nanungo continues.

GERMANY'S FOOD SHORTAGE.

Amsterdam, May 15. The "Koelnische Folkzaitung'" Berlin correspondent says that hitherto 1,852 tons of grain arrived in Germany from Ukraine or less than one fiftieth part of what, was due by the 1st May. There are now only 8,700,000 pigs în Germany compared with 13,000,000 a year ago. The decrease in the weight of cattle is shown by the fact that 1,600,000 cattle had to be slaughtered this spring to obtain the same amount of ment as was produced a year ago from 109,000 hearts.

Amsterdam, May 17.

The German daily broad ration has been reduced from 200 to 180 grammes from June 6, "owing to uncertainty whether the supplies from Ukraine will arrive before. the harvest."

A GALLANT SEAMAN.:-

London, May 17, The Gazette" advises that the Victoria Cross has been posthumously awarded to Seaman J. H. Carless. In the" action in Heligoland Bight on 17th November last year, al- though mortally wounded in the abdomen he continued to serve the gun at which he was acting as rammer, lifting a projectile and helping to clear other casualties. He collapsed once but got up and tried again, and cheered on the new gun-crew. "He then fell and died. He set a very inspiring and memorable example. He continued to do effective work against the King's enemies whilst mortally wounded.”

ITALIAN APPEAL TO AMERICA.

The Associated Press reports that Italy has informally informed the United States that a few thousand American troops on the Italian front would be very desirable in order. to counter-act the active German propaganda and hearten the civilian and military population
